Tax return: why does this keep happening?

Ok, so this has happened for the second year in a row with my tax refund–I send off my return in the mail, wait forever, and finally get a notice that says I’m eligible for an additional tax credit of $x. Great right? The problem is, when I do finally get my tax refund check, it’s only for the additional monies they discovered I was eligible for. My original return amount (which in my case this year was several thousand so I really want it!) has now been ‘applied to next year’s estimated tax.’ I don’t want to apply any of it to next year’s estimated tax, I want my money now!! that’s why I sent in a return!! I didn’t put that I wanted any withheld to go towards next years taxes because I’m a single mom and don’t make enough to have to owe them anything anyway. It is so hard to talk to a real person on the irs phone line too, it’s just all automated and every time I go through the whole shpeel I just get the lady saying ‘thank you, goodbye!’ V frustrated. Anyone have any advice or know how to help?

Should I cash my overpaid tax return check?

This is my first year receiving a tax return in the U.S (I lived and worked previously in Canada). I turned 18 early this year, and as a result of pressure from a friend wrongly claimed myself as independent when filing my taxes online. My refund amount was around 300$. However, my father DID file me as a dependant so my return is meant to be around 70$ instead. I filled out a form, printed out an amended return, and mailed it to the IRS office the following Monday (Two or three days later) but still received the $300 check weeks later. I’ve kept the check unused in my house for three weeks since without cashing it. Today I attempted to call both the IRS hot line and local offices but neither offered any options to help (Only aid for lost returns or mailing status) and now I am annoyed that my return is about to be nothing at all since I can’t get ahold of them to ask for the correct amount.

Should I cash the check and expect them to ask for the remaining $230 or so back? I’ll have the money to pay them back regardless. Or should I not expect them to realize their mistake? I’m not trying to be dishonest but there are people with much more important return situations I guess.
I just got two contradicting answers…I’m about to not cash the check after all and just let them keep all the money. I don’t want to be charged interest and penalties!

What does it mean to have your amended tax return transferred to the IRS’s Internal Examination department?

My husband is military and we were told by a professional preparer that his uniforms, gas for driving to work, hair cuts, etc… were deductible, so we filed an amendment for 2003 and 2006. Called the IRS to check the status and they told me that it had been transferred to the Internal Examination dept. She said it doesn’t mean it will be audited, but it’s being looked at. Is this a common thing to have happen? What i’m really worried about, is we don’t have receipts for all of those things if they request them. The preparer said we would be fine without them since a lot of military claim those things and it’s common knowledge that they have to purchase/use those things for their job.
PLEASE help as I’m starting to freak out! Also, how much time with this add on to the 8-12 week window?
So, if this is a scam, as i’m beginning to suspect, what will happen? I’ve received the refunds from the orignal returns (which i’m sure are squeaky clean. Standard deductions, no EITC, etc…) but not from the amendments. Will they just dis-allow it and let it go?? Thanks again everyone!
